Who wears Chaytton?
Marie-Hélène: @iciaround

Can you tell our readers a few things about yourself?

I grew up in Montreal, Canada and I’ve been working as a freelance content creator for several years now. I’m equal parts artistic and athletic—both a city girl and an outdoorsy type. I especially love kitesurfing and paddleboarding. I started my first blog after deciding to host travellers for short-term stays in my apartment. They helped me rediscover my hometown and realize that travel is essentially a mindset. What that means is, if we’re conscious about it, we can observe, taste, photograph and explore our surroundings through the eyes of a traveller whether you’re a block from home or on the other side of the world. That’s where my blog ICI x AROUND (Travel here and elsewhere) comes in. Travel is a lifestyle, an appetite for adventure, a quest for thrills and a lust for gratitude. It doesn’t matter whether the soil is foreign or not, or whether the journey is perpetual or occasional, being nomadic is first and foremost a state of mind. Beauty is everywhere and a nomadic eye strives to spot it—close to home and around the world.

What’s on your to-do list when you travel?

  • Shooting the best possible photos and videos
  • Trying interesting outdoor activities and sports
  • Hunting down unusual things to do and places to stay
  • Connecting with locals
  • Discovering local products and food
  • Finding the right balance between quiet moments and getting caught up in the heart of the action
  • Learning about local culture, cuisine, customs, traditions, stories and legends

Who inspires you to be better?

I really admire people who persevere and who have the courage to venture off the beaten track. I don’t think there’s one proven path or lifestyle. We all need to find our way to happiness, even if that means blazing a new trail.

How would your friends describe you?

Hmm, that’s a good question. So, I asked my long-time friend Gabrielle and here’s what she said: “Marie-Hélène is the person to go to when you want to do something completely different and completely crazy. She’s also ready if you need an Aspirin at midnight in the middle of nowhere or if you need tips on the latest travel gadget. In short, she’s always prepared. Everyone needs a Marie-Hélène in their life!”

What city would you most like to live in and why?

Every time I go to France—especially the South of France—I feel right at home. It’s no accident that Quebecers see the French as our cousins, there are clearly a lot of similarities. But I also loved the vibe at Cape Hatteras, a sandy region in North Carolina, USA. It’s a paradise for East Coast kitesurfers. Asia has also captured my heart and I could see myself living a happy existence in Indonesia or the Philippines. But, truth be told, I think I’d always come back to Montreal. Even though the winters are fierce, the city’s creativity and vibrant energy will always speak to me. People here are friendly and there’s a European spirit running through this North American metropolis.

What is something you think everyone should do at least once in their lives?

Without a doubt, it’s travel. And I don’t mean going to an all-inclusive and sitting on the beach. I mean truly stepping outside your comfort zone and immersing yourself in a new culture. It puts your life into perspective and gives you a window into different ways of thinking. What is the point of life if you’re not curious and intrigued by new places, things and ideas?

What is your strongest personal quality?

I would say that I’m persistent. As Frank Sinatra so aptly put it, “Each time I find myself flat on my face, I pick myself up and get back in the race.”

What do you like about Chaytton?

Chaytton frames are really stylish and nice! My favourite collections are the wood and bamboo frames. In addition to looking good, they’re one of a kind, super lightweight, comfortable and eco-friendly! I was blown away by the high-quality polarised lenses with UV400 protection because I’m really sensitive to the sun. They’re a cut above for anyone into water sports.

How can brands contact you for collaboration?

I’m always open to collaborating with brands. Interested labels can DM me through my Instagram or Facebook account @iciaround.

Is there anything else you would you like to share with the readers?

“Travel is the only thing you buy that makes you richer.”
